One of the First Scans...
Title:  One of the First Scans...
Description:  I love the Rio Grande. This is former D&RGW 5413, now WE (Wheeling & Lake Erie) 5413, still in full Rio Grande paint. I didn't know the W&LE had any of the Grande's T-2's, so it was quite a surprise to see it in the fuel line in Bethlehem, PA, on NS. Larry Parsons, CEO of the W&LE, is an old Rio Grande guy who runs a tight ship. This is a detail shot of the rear headlight...pretty distinctive! Taken with permission.

When it all made sense...
Title:  When it all made sense...
Description:  Sunset at the West Switch of Sagers Siding, in eastern Utah, in the desert, on the D&RGW mainline. I was here for the first time on August 19, 2000, chasing a dream on the former Rio Grande. I found what I was looking for. This image is from a trip 9 years later. Regardless, this spot is my all-time favorite.

His Name Was...
Title:  His Name Was...
Description:  This friendly conductor came out to chat while waiting for the eastbound Amtrak Pennsylvanian train to run around his coal drag at MO. I should have posted this photo a year ago, and now I don't remember his name - but he was a friendly guy, working on the railroad!

Just Another Night
Title:  Just Another Night
Description:  A year ago, this was just another night at ALTO tower in Altoona, PA. The operator was OSing a westbound piggyback train, talking to helper crews at WORKS, sipping a cup of coffee. How times change!

The Eve of Change
Title:  The Eve of Change
Description:  CP WORKS waits quietly in the darkness of a warm August 6, 2011, with new signals awaiting their cut-in. Helpers idle in the relay tracks. EOTs glow red in the distance. The Juniata Shops hum behind.

Canyonlands Majesty

Description:  UP's 'dirty dirt' turn works upgrade out of the Colorado River canyon north of Moab, UT, ferrying radioactive tailings from the old uranium mine at Moab to a landfill site near Cisco.

Glorious Sandstone
Title:  Glorious Sandstone
Description:  UP 7141 working in push-pull mode leads a trainload of contaminated soil up the former D&RGW Cane Creek ("Potash") Branch out of the Colorado River valley, passing sandstone monoliths on the way. It's difficult to find railroad scenes more beautiful than this!
